Classroom Newsletter
November 13, 2017
It seems that the fall weather is here! Please remember that we walk to the big building and have recess outside everyday. Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather.
Thank you to all the parents that have volunteered to help in our classroom. The students and I appreciate it very much!
Language Arts
We continue to introduce new sounds and spellings in a systematic way. This gives the students information they need to decode unknown words. The students are enjoying the research lab. We are researching wild and endangered animals. Two research questions have been answered so far- What does your animal look like? and How does your animal act? This week we will learn how the animals we are researching are classified. The research lab is very challenging to most first graders because there is lots of writing.
Math
Last week we introduced subtraction. The students played 2 games to practice subtraction- 5 in a Row Subtraction and Roll and Record Subtraction. We also worked on solving subtraction story problems. The students are learning that there are many strategies that they can use to solve problems- counting backwards, ten frames, or number lines.
Science
The latest physical property that we worked on was floating and sinking. The students experimented by placing each solid in a bowl of water to determine if it floats, sinks, or does both!
Social Studies
We continue to work on being responsible, respectful, safe, and excellent citizens at Rehoboth Elementary! We began a new positive behavior management activity. The students are trying to earn complements outside the classroom. It takes everyone doing an excellent job.
Important Dates
Nov. 22nd- Nov. 26th
Thanksgiving Break!
